Macaroni Moms - Making a Difference

Chase Foods รขโ‚ฌโ€œ Allergy Free Store

By Karen Butler September 1, 2010

“Our goal is to educate people in the community that eating clean and healthy and understanding what they are eating doesn’t have to be so difficult.  We’re using our knowledge and experience in reading labels and selecting the best food to make it easier for our customers.”  Michele Doss

Michele Doss is all about family.  After struggling to serve her children the healthy, allergen-free foods they needed she founded Chase Foods store to better serve her family and all of the other families challenged with food-based or food-activated health issues.  Right after her 3rdchild, Chase, was born he suffered an allergic reaction to dairy products through her breastmilk.  After removing dairy from her diet, Chase had a complete change.

Over the next very difficult year, the family discovered that not just dairy, but gluten needed to be removed from Chase’s diet as well.  Michele and her family have become label-reading experts, and have found that their dietary changes have helped the rest of the family, in addition to being life-saving for Chase.

After many hours of driving to and from the closest store, nearly 18 miles away, and still being unable to find exactly the products she need for her family, she decided to put her experience to work helping other families like hers.  So, a few months ago, she opened Chase Foods store, obviously named for her darling son.

The store is about 90% gluten free and slowly adding more products and services as the customer base grows.  They are including organic produce through a weekly organic produce group and a northside farmers market.  They are developing an online store to offer ordering online with curbside pick up for busy families.  And, because she knows how difficult and time consuming it can be to study labels and learn about all of the food options, the store has a playroom available to parents that are newer to the diet and need help and time to study the foods.

And, Michele is not done, yet!  She hopes to bring in prepared lunches that are free from the major allergens, she wants to offer cooking classes, and in the late fall she hopes to start a support group for those like her that need to cook a certain way for the health of the people they love.  Stay tuned for a big announcement of an exciting new addition to her stores already wonderful options.  Here’s a hint:  she is going to need more space!  And, mark your calendar for the Grand Opening Event on Saturday, September 18 from 10am to 2pm.  She will have a bounce house, cooking demonstrations, free samples and lots more for the whole family.
